Throughout November and December, Team Grasmere (Grasmere WI and friends) successfully set and smashed their own squatting challenge to raise funds for St Mary’s Hospice. Tog
ether, over 50 squatters each achieved an impressive 50 squats a day. Team Grasmere has raised over £2,500 for St Mary’s Hospice through this challenge while working out in the most creative and scenic of spaces; from in cafes and hotels, up Helvellyn and many other fells, in the spa and even festive squats in Santa’s Grotto at Grasmere Village Hall Christmas Fair!
Annabelle Holloway, Area Fundraising Manager for St Mary’s Hospice, said: “Grasmere WI and friends are great supporters of St Mary’s Hospice. They are always looking for a new challenge to take on and a way to raise vital funds for our local hospice. This February, the group completed a steps challenge for St Mary’s: committing to 9,000 steps a day every day of the month. This is a challenge that Team Grasmere do every year and this year they raised over £1,000. Some of the members are also signed up to St Mary’s upcoming Helvellyn at Night walk, taking place on Saturday 10th June. We couldn’t do what we do without the continued and generous support of our fundraisers.”
Sue Dixon, President of Grasmere WI and avid supporter of St Mary’s Hospice, said: “Grasmere WI is extremely proud to support the fabulous St Mary’s Hospice in any way we can. Over the last 2 years or so, we have been involved in a number of different activities and events which have raised over £27,000 for the hospice. This includes climbing Scafell Pike at night, numerous stepping challenges, 50 squats a day, creating and sponsoring a Grasmere Christmas tree during lockdown and hosting a memorial party for a member we lost recently. This coming May we are holding a women-only burlesque party in aid of St Mary’s, taking place on Thursday 4th May at the Wordsworth Hotel, Grasmere. Tickets are £10, including a glass of bucks fizz, can be purchased by emailing myramccraith@aol.com. We hope to see you there!”
