When I was asked about joining the hospice as a trustee, I soon realised that I had a lot to learn. It took at least a year of spending time at the Hospice and reading before I started to feel confident that I understood how the hospice worked.
In addition to Board meetings I also joined the HR committee as chair. HR is what I was involved with throughout my career in glassmaking and shipbuilding, and which included management and organisation development, recruitment, pay and grading.
I started to link up with Millom shop and to help with the Wednesday afternoon entertainment for Day Services. I have met plenty of very good people.
I probably get as much, or more, from volunteering as I put in. I have up to five more years as a trustee (nine is the limit), and I want to help maintain the excellent work done now, and to work with colleagues to develop the organisation to meet the challenges ahead.
