At St Mary’s we believe that everyone living in Furness and the South Lakes deserves the best possible care at the end of their lives — do you?
We’re recruiting new trustees to join our board. We’re proud of what we do, and if you want to take up a role that can directly impact improving the lives of those needing end-of-life care, and their families, you could be just who we’re looking for.
About you:
There is no such thing as a set criteria or ideal specification.
All of our trustees bring different skills from various careers; combining to ensure St Mary’s thrives financially while delivering the highest quality of care to everyone who needs us, right across our communities.
Whatever your skills or experience, your help could be vital to us, and applications are open to anyone.
- You might have a clinical or palliative care background and want to contribute your direct expertise and experience to enhance our approach to governance.
- You might have a history as a people manager or have worked in Human Resources, and be able to contribute to our people strategy, and how we manage a growing team of over 130 staff.
- Perhaps you have a background in fundraising and want to help us shape the strategy that helps us generate the £5.5 million we need to operate each year.
- Or maybe you just really care about your community, and you want to make sure we’re able to keep looking after people in Orsmgill, or Millom, or Grange, or any of the other communities we serve.
It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced manager, a seasoned board member or if this is your first step into a role like this—we have an onboarding and trustee mentoring program that will ensure you feel supported and able to develop your skills.
Here’s why one of our trustees volunteers to help run St Mary’s:
“My journey with St Mary’s started when they were a client of my business; I knew what a hospice was for, but had no idea about the amount of work that goes on or the amount of funding they have to raise. I’m passionate about making sure our local area has the best services because I think our rurality means we miss out on a lot.
“As a business owner, I was worried that I’d struggle to fit being a trustee around my busy work life. But they’ve been flexible in terms of when meetings are, and I always know the level of commitment they need from me in advance.
“Being part of St Mary’s makes me proud; it is a vital service and one I want to make sure is around for future generations.” James Higgins, St Mary’s Trustee and Owner of 32 West

We’re hosting an open afternoon/evening for potential trustees in January at our Compassionate Communities Hub, in Barrow. It’ll run from 4pm until 6pm on January 20th— and is open to anyone. We’ll have members of our senior management team, and current trustees, available to talk to.
And we know there are mince pies to eat and festivities to be had between now and then, so if you want us to send you a reminder nearer the time, register your interest by emailing communications@stmaryshospice.org.uk
