Piel Island Walk – A Unique Adventure Across the Sands

Join us for a rare and exciting opportunity to take part in the Piel Island Walk, an unforgettable guided journey across the sands from Walney Island to Piel Island. Led by expert guide John Irving and supported by long-time Piel Island enthusiast John Murphy, this event offers fascinating insights into the area’s wildlife, rich history, and breathtaking landscapes.
What to Expect
- A guided walk across varied terrain, including sand, shingle, rock, and salt marsh.
- A reasonably paced, family-friendly trek, lasting approximately 45 minutes each way.
- A chance to refresh at the iconic Ship Inn before the return journey.
- Spectacular views and a wealth of historical and ecological insights.
- All proceeds go towards Katie’s Kilimanjaro fundraising.
Important Information
- Meeting Point: Snab Point, Walney Island – just off Mawflat Lane, near South End Caravan Park.
- Footwear: Old, comfortable trainers or shoes recommended. Barefoot walking is common, but wellies and heavy boots are discouraged.
- Clothing: Wear layers and bring a change of clothes – expect to get wet and muddy.
- Essentials: Sunscreen, a hat, water, snacks, and a towel.
- Facilities: Toilets are available on Piel Island; however, there are no facilities along the walking route.
- Dogs: Dogs are allowed if they are on a lead.
