Liam’s story
Last Friday, one of our Hospice at Home patients, Liam, married the love of his life, Vicki.
We’d helped them to arrange the wedding, at short notice, because of Liam’s deteriorating health.
Liam and Vicki enjoyed an emotional but magical day celebrating in the glorious sunshine at The Dunes Hotel, with their nearest and dearest. They were even treated to the spectacular beauty of the Aurora Borealis, lighting the sky at the end of the night.
Sadly, the following day, Liam’s condition deteriorated and he was admitted to the hospice, where he spent this final hours surrounded by Vicki, his family and friends. The memories created from their special day will stay with Vicki and the rest of the family forever.
We are only able to help our patients because of the support of the community. None of this would have been possible if not for the incredible kindness and generosity of Smile 4 Smithy – The Craig Smith Charitable Foundation, AMB-Vision, The Dunes Hotel, South Lakes, Lakeland Rings, PhotoHoof, Helen at Ellie’s Designer Florist, Mr Mister in Barrow, and Treat Cycle sweet cart.
We’d also like to thank Liam and Vicki’s friends and family for helping our nursing and fundraising teams pull things together so quickly, and for welcoming Lauren, Ange and Brogan from our clinical team as guests.
Sadly, we cannot change the outcome for those we care for, but we can change the journey.
We are sharing this story with the permission of Vicki and the rest of Liam’s family, to demonstrate why we do what we do, and to celebrate the joy that Liam and Vicki were able to enjoy.
