Iain’s Story
Since July 2011. I used to volunteer for Marie curie cancer care, but they closed the local office so I chose St Mary’s as I had connected with the hospice earlier.
My main role is as a driver bringing patients to “day-care” it gives patients an opportunity to chat on the way. However I volunteer in many other areas like fundraising, selling lottery tickets and manning a stall at Christmas. It keeps me busy and gives me purpose to my life. I’ve started to have a terrific time.
It’s so worthwhile working for the local community. I’m made to feel part of the hospice not just a volunteer, I have made so many friends. It has given me a wider perspective on life. In terms of how I can see the bigger picture, in life.
Don’t hesitate! It’s a wonderful organisation, volunteers are really appreciated. It’s about “giving back” one gains immense spiritual rewards too. There are lots of areas in which you can volunteer.
