Clinical Day Service
The St Mary's Clinical Day Service work closely with our in-patient and Hospice@Home services and in conjunction with GP's, district nurses, and specialist nurses. There are opportunities to talk to professional staff in a safe and friendly environment, to benefit from a range of medical, nursing and therapy services and to participate in a variety of enjoyable activities.
Services and facilities available:
Medical staff - Family doctors remain responsible for the medical care of those attending and will prescribe in the normal way. However, our team of doctors provide specialist advice and suggestions for further treatments.
Nursing staff manage clinics and will assist with dressings etc, providing procedures, eg blood transfusions, when appropriate.
Complementary Therapies are provided on an individual basis and as a group session. An assessment is made prior to individual treatment to help provide the best treatment for you.
Physiotherapy is provided within a group session and on an individual basis. Individual problems are addressed in relation to mobility, exercise, pain management, breathlessness and are tailored to provide the most appropriate treatment for your needs.
Meals and beverages - Cakes, sandwiches and beverages are available during the day.
Entertainment - Although this is a clinical day service we have volunteers to help us provide the social aspects. There are opportunities to get together for a chat, listen to music, play games, and take part in craft sessions and quizzes. Occasionally entertainment is provided and guest speakers are arranged. Relaxation and reminiscence play a regular part in our time table. We also have occasional art and garden based therapy sessions.
How do I get a place at Day Service?
Your GP, district nurse, consultant, specialist nurse or any other health care professional involved in your care can refer you. On receiving your referral we will contact you by phone and arrange for you to visit us.
Day Service availability
Our Day Service is available on up to 10 half days a week, including 2 medical clinics a week and a weekly nurse-led clinic. You will initially attend for an assessment day which will be followed by re-evaluations from time to time, so that you can benefit from an individually tailored programme of care.
Traveling to Day Service
Providing transport for you is part of our service. A member of our volunteer driving team will pick you up from your home and bring you to St Mary's Hospice. The volunteer will also return to take you home again. If you are unwell on arrival a doctor will be available to see you. If you are too unwell to attend, a home visit by your GP can be arranged to assess your condition. Ambulance transport can be provided occasionally if your mobility is such that you are unable to get in a car.
