Hospice Heroes

On 15th August 2009 St Mary's held their first men-only 5km fun run at Hawcoat Sports Club in Barrow. The event attracted some 90 entries and spectators would have been forgiven for thinking Christmas had come early.

That’s because one of the runners turned up as Santa Claus. But the outfit was not enough to earn the man the prize for best fancy dress. Instead that gong went to Keith Muldoon, who dressed as a caveman.

David Fulford was first home in 19 minutes 16 seconds. Peter Savage was only a few strides behind and took second place. Ashton Coward came third.

The honour for most money raised went to Ross Taylor, who brought in £580.

We will be holding another Hospice Heroes run in 2010 which will be open to all males over 16, no matter what their ability. We will be offering a prize for the first to complete the 3.5 mile cross country course, but competitors will be able to power-walk their way round if they don't want to run.

We hope to see 500 men take part in this sponsored event to raise vital funds for St Mary's. It costs £10 to register for the fun run and all participants will receive a goody bag, which will include a t-shirt, a medal and much more.

Fancy dress is optional but there will be a prize for the best dressed and if Superman, Spiderman, and a host of other colourful characters want to take time out from saving the world to run in aid of St Mary's we will be happy to accommodate them!

Family entertainment and refreshments will be available at the sports club and we would like to see lots of friends and family members come to cheer the competitors on the day.

A registration form for the event will be available early 2010.
